What is BS EN ISO 13385-2:2020 about?
This updated international specification is the second in a two-part series on callipers: one of the most basic, yet most important instruments used in manufacturing and mechanical engineering. BS EN ISO 13385-2:2020 covers calliper depth gauges.
Who is BS EN ISO 13385-2:2020 for?
It’s aimed at anyone in manufacturing or mechanical engineering who needs to measure the dimensional quantity of a step or the depth of a feature, specifically:
It will be used in many industrial sectors including:
Why should you use BS EN ISO 13385-2:2020?
It specifies the most important and latest design and metrological characteristics of calliper depth gauges with:
- Analogue indication: vernier scale or circular scale (dial)
- Digital indication: digital display
For the first time, BS EN ISO 13385-2:2020 includes default values for maximum permissible errors.
Using the standard helps improve efficiency and manage risk.
NOTE: General design characteristics for calliper depth gauges have been removed from this edition and now appear in the revised version of the generic measuring instruments standard BS EN ISO 14978:2018 Geometrical product specifications (GPS). General concepts and requirements for GPS measuring equipment. BS EN ISO 14978:2018 should be used alongside BS EN ISO 13385-2:2020.
What’s new about BS EN ISO 13385-2:2020?
This revision of the 2011 version aims to make the document more useful. Specifically the main changes are:
a) The figures have been updated to show more modern technology
b) General design characteristics have been removed and reference to ISO 14978:2018 included
c) Metrological characteristics have been clarified and modified
d) Requirements for test methods have been included
Default values for maximum permissible errors have been added
BSI recommends this version of standard for organisations operating in or with the UK. The ISO edition is available here if required.
