BS EN 45552 discusses the general method for the assessment of the durability of energy-related products. ErP, energy-related products, are products that use energy, or that do not use energy but have an indirect impact on energy consumption.
BS EN 45552 defines a framework comprising of parameters and methods for assessing the reliability and durability of Energy-related products. BS EN 45552 is used in the preparation of product or product-group standardization deliverables. BS EN 45552 has been developed under standardization request M/543 of the European Commission to support Directive 2009/125/EC.
Note 1: Product-group, as used in BS EN 45552, is an umbrella term used to refer to a group of products with similar properties and primary function(s).
Note 2: BS EN 45552 is not intended to be applied to generate product-specific information.
BS EN 45552 on general method for the assessment of the durability of energy-related products is useful for:
Energy-related products include water using devices, building insulation products, windows, and such products. As energy-related products can often not be completely recycled, and the benefits associated with material recovery cannot fully compensate for the energy (and material) demand of the whole production chain. Each disposed energy-related product also means losses in energy and materials. BS EN 45552 describes a general assessment method that is intended to be adapted for application at a product or product-group level, in order to assess the reliability/ durability of ErPs.
BS EN 45552 covers a general method for the assessment of the reliability and the durability of ErPs. Reliability represents the assessment of a probability of duration from first use to the first failure or in between failures. Durability is the whole expected time for this same period and not a probability. Therefore, increasing the durability of energy-related products can contribute to a reduction in the quantity of raw materials used and energy required for the production/disposal of energy-related products. This, consequently, reduces adverse environmental impacts.
