What is BS EN 45553 about?

BS EN 45553 discusses the general method for the assessment of the ability to remanufacture energy-related products. ErP, energy-related products, are products that use energy, or that do not use energy but have an indirect impact on energy consumption.

BS EN 45553 contains a general method to assess the ability of energy-related products to be remanufactured. BS EN 45553 is used by technical committees when producing horizontal, generic, and product, or product group, standards. A scoring system to quantify the ability of an energy-related product to be remanufactured is not covered in BS EN 45553. Only the criteria for the ability of an energy-related product to be remanufactured are presented in BS EN 45553

Note 1: BS EN 45553 does not cover general methods for assessing the ability of an energy-related product to be refurbished.

Note 2: To assess the ability of an energy-related product to be remanufactured, the described criteria are applied to the parts of the energy-related product.

Who is BS EN 45553 for?

BS EN 45553 on general method for the assessment of the ability to remanufacture energy-related products is useful for:

  • Energy-related product manufacturers and suppliers
  • Environmental agencies
  • Designers of energy-related products

Why should you use BS EN 45553?

Energy-related products include water using devices, building insulation products, windows, and such products. BS EN 45553 provides a general method for assessing the ability of an energy-related product to be remanufactured, to be used by technical committees when producing horizontal, generic, and product-specific, or product-group, publications. BS EN 45553 identifies seven general process steps which are crucial to the remanufacturing process. Each of the seven steps is linked to several product attributes of the energy-related product.

As the terms remanufacturing and refurbishment are sometimes used interchangeably in different industry sectors, it is necessary to clarify what is meant by remanufacturing in BS EN 45553. Remanufacturing is identified as an industrial process where at least one change, that influences the safety, original performance, purpose, or type of the product; is applied to the energy-related product.
