BS EN 89 defines the specifications and test methods for the construction, safety, rational use of energy and fitness for purpose, environment, and classification and marking of gas-fired storage water heaters for domestic hot water use, hereafter called “appliance”.
BS EN 89 has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 48 “Domestic gas-fired water heaters”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.

The quality and thickness of the materials used in their construction shall be such that, under normal conditions of use, maintenance and adjustment, these materials shall withstand the mechanical, chemical and thermal conditions to which they may be subjected during a reasonable life. BS EN 89 ensures that products comply with the requirements meet current technological development and requirements with regard to the life of the water heaters and their physiological suitability. BS EN 89 deals with safety, rational use of energy, and fitness for purpose.
