EN 16905 series is a European Standard that specifies the requirements, test methods, and test conditions for the rating and performance calculation of air conditioners and heat pumps using either air, water, or brine as heat transfer media, with gas-fired endothermic engine driven compressors when used for space heating, cooling and refrigeration, hereafter referred to as “GEHP appliance”.
BS EN 16905-1 is the first part of a series of documents that specifies the terms and definitions of gas-fired endothermic engine-driven heat pumps for heating and/or cooling mode including the engine heat recovery.
BS EN 16905-1 only applies to appliances with a maximum heat input (based on net calorific value) not exceeding 70 kW at standard rating conditions.
BS EN 16905-1 only applies to appliances having:
BS EN 16905-4 applies to appliances only when used for space heating or space cooling or for refrigeration, with or without heat recovery.
Note: The appliances having their condenser cooled by air and by the evaporation of external additional water are not covered by BS EN 16905-4.
BS EN 16905-1 on gas-fired endothermic engine-driven heat pumps is applicable to:
Gas-fired endothermic engine-driven heat pumps are essentially air-source heat pumps that are powered by a heat source such as natural gas, propane, solar-heated water, or geothermal-heated water rather than electricity.
BS EN 16905-1 helps you standardize the terminologies gas-fired endothermic engine-driven heat pumps for heating and/or cooling applications including the engine heat recovery. Having a common point of reference for definitions helps prevent any misinterpretation and miscommunication between entities involved in the field of energy and heat transfer engineering, and those dealing with gas-fired endothermic heat pumps. This can establish seamless workflow processes that mitigate hiccups and disruptions.
Thus, adopting guidelines in BS EN 16905-1 can improve quality and efficiency of gas-fired endothermic heat pumps for use in various industrial and domestic applications.
