What is BS EN 716-1 - Safety requirements for children's cots and folding cots about?  

BS EN 716-1 assesses the safety of children's cots and folding cots. BS EN 716-1 specifies safety requirements for children's cots for domestic use with an internal length greater than 900 mm but not more than 1 400 mm. 

Note 1: The requirements apply to a cot that is fully assembled and ready for use. 

Note 2: For cots that can be converted into other items e.g., changing units, playpens additional requirements can apply. 

Note 3: BS EN 716-1 does not apply to carry cots, cribs, and cradles for which a separate European standard exists.

BS EN 716-1:2017 supersedes BS EN 716‑1:2008+A1:2013, which is withdrawn. 

BS EN 716-1:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 716‑1:2008+A1:2013. These include: 

  • Introduction of the elements of the amendment 
  • Modification of the references (BS EN 716-2:2008+A1:2013 replaced with BS EN 716–2:2017
  • Clarification of 4.4.8.1, “Movable sides” 
  • Clarification of the instructions for use 
  • Addition of a warning concerning the risk to add a second mattress in the bed 
  • Modification of Clause 7 concerning marking
