BS EN 597 is a series of European standards concerned with the ignitability of upholstered furniture using various ignition sources. BS EN 597-1 is the first part of the multi-series.
BS EN 597-1 specifies a test method to assess the ignitability of mattresses, upholstered bed bases or mattress pads when subjected to a smouldering cigarette as an ignition source.
BS EN 597-1 contains annex A (informative) Model test report form.
Note: Air mattresses and water beds are excluded from BS EN 597-1.
BS EN 597-1 on ignitability of mattresses and upholstered bed bases is useful for:
Mattresses and upholstered bed bases can catch fire easily. Assessment of ignitability is necessary to understand the threshold of catching fire. BS EN 597-1 provides guidelines for assessment procedures, including progressive smouldering ignition and flaming ignition.
BS EN 597-1 provides test methods to establish the burning behaviour of furniture, furnishing, mattresses, and upholstered bed bases.
With obedience and compliance to BS EN 597-1, you can efficiently manufacture high-quality products and make sure the products consistently meet and exceed quality expectations.
BS EN 597-1:2015 supersedes EN 597-1:1994, which is withdrawn.
BS EN 597-1:2015 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 597-1:1994.
These include:
