BS EN 61508-2 applies to any safety-related system with at least one electrical, electronic or programmable electronic-based component. It also includes all subsystems and their components within an E/E/PE safety-related system, such as sensors, actuators and operator interfaces.
The standard demonstrates how overall safety is refined into E/E/PE safety function requirements, as well as safety integrity requirements. BS EN 61508-2 also defines activities that should be applied during the design and manufacturing of these safety-related systems.
BS EN 61508-2 first looks at all the required elements to ensure conformance to its specifications, before demonstrating how to manage functional safety. The standard then focuses on E/E/PE system safety lifecycle requirements – including design specifications, system safety validating planning, development, and system integration. BS EN 61508-2 concludes with practical guidance on how to conduct a functional safety assessment.
A Commented Version (CMV) of this standard series is available here. Please note, the CMV of the standard is not adopted, and therefore doesn’t contain an additional national foreword, or national annex that might be contained in the BS adoption of the standard. However the IEC text that forms the content of the standard is identical to the BS adoption of the standard.
Commented Versions (CMVs) are specialized publications featuring detailed commentary from technical experts on the major changes between the new edition of a standard and the previous one. Comments may include an explanation for the changes as well as information on the impact of these changes on the application and usability of the standard.
