What is BS 2869 – Fuel oils about?

With the complexity of modern fixed combustion applications (non-road engines), BS 2869:2023 is needed to help users choose the correct fuel for their applications and equipment as specified by the equipment manufacturers. This updated standard defines fuel oils to be used in applications other than internal combustion engines.

Who is BS 2869 – Fuel oils for?

  • Fuel producers, refiners, blenders and distributors

  • Point of use equipment manufacturers, designers and end-users

What does BS 2869 – Fuel oils cover?

BS 2869 gives requirements for fuel oils for agricultural, domestic, commercial and industrial fixed combustion applications. It is divided into eight classes for specific applications.

NOTE: BS 2869:2023 no longer applies to fuels for use in internal combustion engines in on-road and non-road mobile and stationary applications, which are now covered in BS EN 590:2022 Automotive fuels – Distillate – Requirements and test methods.

Why should you use BS 2869 – Fuel oils?

BS 2869:2023 is used by refiners and blenders to define the quality of fuel to be used in

agricultural, domestic, commercial and industrial fixed combustion applications and by suppliers and end-users to make sure they’re ordering a known and consistent quality of fuel which is appropriate for their equipment and applications as specified by the equipment manufacturer. As such the standard:

  • strengthens risk management and increases safety

  • improves efficiency

  • increases confidence in fuel oils

  • helps users enter new markets

The standard has been fully updated and brought into line with recent updates to BS EN 590:2022.

BS 2869:2023 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being, Goal 7 on affordable and clean energy, Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities, Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production and Goal 15 on life on land.

What’s new about BS 2869:2023?

This full revision of BS 2869:2017 has been conducted to bring BS 2869:2023 into line with recent updates to BS EN 590:2022, which is the European Standard for automotive diesel fuel.

Changes in BS 2869:2023 include:

  1. it has been brought into line with the latest edition of BS EN 590, in particular the particle contamination in Class D has been fully incorporated (see BS EN 590:2022)
  2. a new grade ‘I’ has been added for industrial furnace oil, which is class C2 kerosene typically blended with waste oils
  3. the maximum density for Class C2 – kerosene has been reduced and a maximum net specific energy has been added
  4. for Class D middle distillate fuel – a maximum density requirement has been added
  5. cetane requirements have been deleted for certain fuels due to changes in use of fuel
  6. the historic Class A2 – Automotive distillate fuel for non-road mobile machinery has been deleted/discontinued
