What is ISO 22868 about?  

ISO 22868 discusses about Engineering method for Forestry and gardening machinery. ISO 22868 specifies a noise test code for determining the common noise emission characteristics of portable, hand-held, combustion engine powered forest and garden machines. 

ISO 22868 guides you with specific requirements for chain-saws, brush-cutters, grass trimmers, edgers, pole-mounted powered pruners, hedge-trimmers and garden blowers/vacuums/knapsack mist blowers, efficiently and under standardized conditions.  

Note: Noise emission characteristics include the A-weighted emission sound pressure level at the operator position and the A-weighted sound power level.

Why should you use ISO 22868? 

Noise test code is necessary in order to measure the degree of sound levels at the working sites, gives parameters for reducing the noise exposure and helps reduce occupational noise-induced hearing loss. 

ISO 22868 helps you determine the common noise emission characteristics using a noise test code for forestry and gardening machinery so that you can take care of noise control at the designing stage itself. 

Noise test codes described in ISO 22868 enable you to verify the effort regarding low noise design. ISO 22868 also helps you compare the noise emitted by machines in the same category and make declarations regarding noise emitted. 

What’s changed since the last update?     

BS EN ISO 22868:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 22868:2011, which is withdrawn. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows: 

• Inclusion of edgers and knapsack mist blowers in the scope, inclusion of edgers in the specific conditions described in Annex B 
• Correction of the calculation of microphone positions for the hemisphere (Figure 1) according to ISO 3744:2010 
• Alignment of the operation conditions for the determination of the sound power level with those for the determination of the emission sound pressure level 
• Lateral width of the test timber for chain-saw testing reduced to 150 mm to account for small machines with short guide bars 
• Amendments in Annex E to include knapsack mist blowers and better describe the set-up of the machines with different blower tubes
