BS EN 13732 is a European standard that covers requirements for bulk milk coolers, enabling the prevention of hazards, contamination and spoilage in dairy applications.
BS EN 13732 standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to bulk milk coolers on farms, when they are used as intended and under the conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer.
BS EN 13732 applies to refrigerated bulk milk tanks with air-cooled condensing units and automatic control intended for installation on farms or at milk collecting points. It applies to tanks for two milkings (24 h), four milkings (48 h) and six milkings (72 h), in which the cooling takes place totally (non-pre-cooled milk) or partially (in case of pre-cooled milk) within the tank.
BS EN 13732 includes information concerning the manufacturer's declaration of the noise emission level of the cooler.
Note 1: BS EN 13732 does not cover –
Note 2: BS EN 13732 does not cover the calibration requirements for the tank to be used as a system for payment purpose.
Note 3: BS EN 13732 is not applicable to bulk milk coolers on farms that are manufactured before the date of its publication as an EN.
BS EN 13732 on requirements for bulk milk coolers applies to:
A bulk milk cooler is a device that lowers the temperature of the milk to prevent microorganisms from growing. As the heat from the milk is transferred to the cool water on the opposite side of each plate, the temperature of the milk is lowered.
BS EN 13732 provides users with a list of significant hazards, including mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, thermal hazards, errors of fitting, loss of stability and more, enabling users to identify and determine risks associated with bulk milk cooler operations.
BS EN 13732 provides users guidance on safety requirements, protective measures, verification and tests, information for use, and noise test code, ensuring the safety and protection in the installation and operations of bulk milk coolers.
With obedience and compliance to BS EN 13732, users can develop and assess bulk milk coolers, ensuring safety, performance and durability in dairy applications.
BS EN 13732:2013 supersedes BS EN 13732:2002+A2:2009, which is now withdrawn.
