What is BS EN 12845 - Automatic sprinkler systems about?

BS EN 12845 is a European standard that discusses automatic sprinkler systems that are a part of fixed firefighting systems. The aim of BS EN 12845 is to ensure optimal protection in the event of a fire hazard.

BS EN 12845 specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, installation, and maintenance of fixed fire sprinkler systems in buildings and industrial plants, and particular requirements for sprinkler systems that are integral to measures for the protection of life.

BS EN 12845 covers the classification of hazards, provision of water supplies, components to be used, installation and testing of the system, maintenance, and the extension of existing systems, and identifies construction details of buildings which are the minimum necessary for satisfactory performance of sprinkler systems.

Note: BS EN 12845 does not cover water supplies to systems other than sprinklers.

Who is BS EN 12845 - Automatic sprinkler systems for?

BS EN 12845 on automatic sprinkler systems is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of fixed firefighting equipment
  • Manufacturers of automatic sprinklers
  • Entities involved in design, installation and maintenance of automatic sprinkler systems
  • Fire safety department

Why should you use BS EN 12845 - Automatic sprinkler systems?

An automatic sprinkler system is designed to detect a fire and extinguish it with water in its early stages or hold the fire in check so that extinguishment can be completed by other means.

BS EN 12845 walks you through process of contract planning and documentation, the extent of sprinkler protection, hazard classes, design characteristics and uses, performance and type of water supplies and pumps, and temperature ratings. Best industry recommendations on spacing and location of sprinklers, pipe sizing and layout, alarms and alarm devices and pipework are also covered as BS EN 12845.

As a result of adopting these standardized guidelines, BS EN 12845 helps ensure that the automatic sprinkler systems are operationally efficient for the mitigation of fire-related risks and hazards.
