BS EN 50411 is a series on fibre organisers and closures to be used in optical fibre communication systems. Fibre organisers and closures also known as fibre optic splicing closures are devices used to provide space and protection for fibre optic cables spliced together. BS EN 50411-3-2 contains the initial, start of life’s dimensional, optical, mechanical, and environmental performance requirements, which a single mode mechanical splice shall meet in order for it to be categorized as an EN standard product.
Since different variants and grades of performance are permitted, product marking and identification details are given in BS EN 50411-3-2. Although in BS EN 50411-3-2 the product is qualified for EN 60793-2-50 types B1.1 and B1.3 singlemode fibres, it may also be suitable for other fibre types.

The fibre optic closure connects and stores optical fibres safely either in the outside plant or indoor buildings. BS EN 50411-3-2 the performance of a mechanical splice is given with identical fibres only. Losses associated with fibre cladding diameter and mode field mismatch are not considered. The measured attenuation is a function of the core concentricity, cladding non-circularity and alignment capability. The optical return loss performance is a function of the index matching gel and the fibre end face preparation.
A single-mode mechanical fibre splice is a passive optical interconnection component that provides optical and mechanical continuity between two optical fibres or cables. The products described in BS EN 50411-3-2 are based on the mechanical alignment of two cleaved fibres. The fibres are protected against the ingress of dust or water by a sealing material, generally an index matching gel, to both minimise reflections and improve attenuation at the glass/gel/glass interface. Some splices may have a limited reinstallation capability. In this case, the re-installability is clearly stated and the re-installation test 10 in 8.3 is conducted. Using BS EN 50411-3-2 you can specify the initial, start of life’s dimensional, optical, mechanical, and environmental performance requirements of a single-mode mechanical splice.
