What is BS EN IEC 61756‑1 about?  

BS EN IEC 61756 is a series of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. BS EN IEC 61756‑1 covers general information on fibre management system interfaces. BS EN IEC 61756‑1 includes the definitions and rules under which a fibre management system (FMS) interface is created. BS EN IEC 61756‑1 also provides criteria to identify the minimum bending radius for stored fibres. BS EN IEC 61756‑1 allows both single-mode and multimode fibres to be used. 

Note 1: Liquid, gas or dust sealing requirements at the cable entry area or cable element ending are not covered in BS EN IEC 61756‑1.

Why should you use BS EN IEC 61756‑1?  

Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components transmit information from one place to another by sending pulses of infrared light through fibre. BS EN IEC 61756‑1 discusses the specification of the fibre management system that is typically installed inside a protective housing, normally a closure, wall box, distribution frame, or street cabinet. BS EN IEC 61756‑1 illustrates and defines the interface between the fibre management system and the protective housing. 

A fibre management system contains all necessary functions related to distribution, junction or connection between the fibres of incoming and outgoing cables. The minimum contents of a fibre management system as discussed in BS EN IEC 61756‑1 are the parts fulfilling the functions of splice tray, fibre storage and guiding elements. For single circuit systems, the distribution element is also needed. Other functional parts, like passive or active optical components, optical connector sets, or cable element storage devices are optional. 

Using BS EN IEC 61756‑1 for the interface standard for fibre management systems can track the functions or attributes of the system such as schematic design, physical locations of assets, splice points (mechanical/fusion), and more. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN IEC 61756‑1:2020 supersedes BS IEC 61756-1:2019. BS EN IEC 61756‑1:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS IEC 61756-1:2019. These include: 

• Addition of figures to show the interface between protective housing and fibre management system 
• Addition of definitions for protective housing, closure, box, street cabinets and optical distribution frame modules 
• Addition of table with dimensions of fusion splice protectors and mechanical splices 
• Addition of a method to identify the minimum bending radius for stored fibres 
• Addition of annexe A for example of calculating the minimum bending radius of stored fibres in a fibre management system
