Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components architecture implement a point-to-multipoint topology in which a single optical fibre serves multiple endpoints by using unpowered (passive) fibre optic splitters to divide the fibre bandwidth among the endpoints. BS EN 60876-1 describes fibre optic spatial switches which are classified based on type, style, variant, assessment level and normative reference extensions.
Switches in BS EN 60876-1 are divided into types by their actuation mechanism, latching and topology (optical switching function). There are multiple actuation mechanisms of switches. A non-exhaustive of current technologies used in the industry are magneto-optic effect (MO), mechanical, micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) and thermo-optic effect (TO). Switches are divided into two types based on the latching function which are the latching switch and non-latching switch. There are an essentially infinite number of possible topologies. Each topology is illustrated by a schematic diagram and defined by a unique transfer matrix. The device topologies mentioned in BS EN 60876-1 include only those which are in common use within the industry at present. The schematic diagrams which follow do not necessarily correspond to the physical layout of the switch and its ports. The examples given in BS EN 60876-1 apply to unidirectional switches only, where tij ≠ tji. For bi-directional switches, tij = tji in each transfer matrix is mentioned.
