What is BS EN ISO 898-2 - Nuts with specified property classes about?
The second in a series of international standards on the mechanical properties of carbon steel and alloy steel fasteners, BS EN ISO 898-2:2022 is the latest technical revision of a document dealing with the chemical and mechanical requirements of nuts. It is one of the cornerstones of the fastener industry.
Who is BS EN ISO 898-2 - Nuts with specified property classes for?
BS EN ISO 898-2 relevant to a wide range of roles and industry sectors such as construction, rail, automotive, energy and many more. Typical users will be:
- Design engineers
- Quality managers
- Quality engineers
- Quality inspectors
What does BS EN ISO 898-2 - Nuts with specified property classes cover?
BS EN ISO 898-2 specifies the mechanical and physical properties of nuts made of non-alloy steel or alloy steel, for three different nut styles:
- Regular nuts (style 1)
- High nuts (style 2)
- Thin nuts (style 3)
In combination with:
- Coarse pitch thread M5 ≤ D ≥ M39, and fine pitch thread 8 mm ≤ D ≥ 39 mm
- Specifies property classes 04, 05, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 including proof loads
and able to be mated with bolts, screws and studs with property classes in accordance with BS EN ISO 898-1.
Why should you use BS EN ISO 898-2 - Nuts with specified property classes?
- This revised standard contains very up-to-date principles and concepts, particularly those related to carbon steel and alloy steel, while remaining practical and achievable
- The latest reorganization and consolidation of property classes has made it easier to use
- The removal of non-preferred property classes makes it easier to supply
- The standard resolves continuity errors, can help users improve their efficiency and increase the marketability of products
BS EN ISO 898-2 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure.
What’s new about BS EN ISO 898-2:2022?
This is an extensive technical revision of BS EN ISO 898-2:2012 which was the third edition of this standard. It includes the removal of some property classes which are now not commercially available, changes in mechanical properties to align with the latest design standards and a general reorganization to increase usability. Some of the major changes in BS EN ISO 898-2:2022 include:
- Property class 9 has been deleted completely, and nuts with fine pitch thread and property class 5 have been deleted
- Nuts with fine pitch thread in style 2 and property class 12 have been added for diameters 18 mm to 39 mm
- Styles have been more precisely specified for standard hexagon nuts according to their minimum height, and styles have been specified for other nuts according to their minimum design thread height
