Part 11 of BS EN 60079 sets out the specifications for the construction and testing of protected electrical equipment used in explosive gas atmospheres. It also includes equipment that is normally connected to intrinsically safe circuits in these types of atmospheres. This type of protection applies to electrical apparatus in which the circuits themselves cannot cause an explosion. BS EN 60079-11 covers electrical equipment and components sitting outside explosive gas atmospheres or protected by another type of protection – as specified in BS EN 60079-0 – too.
BS EN 60079-1 first looks at the levels of protection and ignition compliance requirements of electrical equipment – for example levels ia, ib and ic. The standard also focuses on the design and construction of electrical equipment and the components that are vital to ensure electrical safety. Other topics include type and routine verification and electrical testing, as well as marking.
BS EN 60079-11:2007 replaces BS EN 60079-11:2002 which is now withdrawn.
