What is EN 1993-1-1 - Design of steel structures about?
EN 1993-1-1 on the design of steel structures gives the latest recommendations for rules associated with the design of steel structures and includes a UK National Annex.
Who is EN 1993-1-1 - Design of steel structures for?
EN 1993-1-1 on the design of steel structures can be adopted by:
- Structural engineers
- Civil engineers
- Designers/Architects
- Manufacturers/producers of construction products
- Welders
- The steel market and any market where steel components are used
- The software systems industry (that produces solutions for design and construction and operation of infrastructure)
Why should you use EN 1993-1-1 - Design of steel structures?
EN 1993-1-1 on the design of steel structures outlines the most up-to-date and relevant design rules for steel structures with material thickness ≥3 mm. This Eurocode also gives additional provisions and guidelines specifically for the structural design of steel buildings.
The National Annex to EN 1993-1-1 contains information on parameters that are left open in the Eurocode for national choice, known as Nationally Determined Parameters (NDP). The NA to BS EN 1993-1-1 includes all the UK's decisions on the permitted NDPs and is applicable to general rules and rules for buildings for steel structures to be constructed in the UK, related to EN 1993-1-1.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 1993-1-1:2005+A1:2014 has been fully revised by experts to bring it up to date with technological developments and industry best practices. Changes include:
- It now incorporates informative Annex B from BS EN 1090-2 Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures
- Technical requirements for steel structures. BS EN 1090-2 introduced the concept of Execution Class as an aid to designers when specifying execution requirements for steel structures. Guidance on the selection of the appropriate Execution Class that had been included in BS EN 1090-2 has now been incorporated as a series of requirements in a new normative Annex C to BS EN 1993-1-1
- Some provisions in Annex C are for national determination - so an amendment to the UK National Annex to BS EN 1993-1-1 is now published that provides the necessary national rules
- Eurocode 3 allows member states to recommend an alternative approach to Table C.1: Choice of execution class (EXC) in their National Annex
- The UK's decisions on Table C.1 are included in the NA to BS EN 1993-1-1
