What is BS EN 60068-2-42 - Sulphur dioxide test on contacts about?

Electrical contacts are used as electrical circuit components in electrical switches, relays, connectors and circuit breakers. BS EN 60068-2-42 is a part of an international multi-series standard that focuses on aspects of environmental testing of electromechanical components.

BS EN 60068-2-42 provide accelerated means to assess the corrosive effects of atmospheres polluted with Sulphur dioxide on contacts and connections. The test in BS EN 60068-2-42 is particularly suitable for giving information on a comparative basis but it is not suitable as a general corrosion test as it may not predict the behavior of contacts and connections in industrial atmospheres.

Note: In view of the limited information to be obtained from accelerated corrosion tests, particular attention should be paid to the guidance on this test given in IEC 60068-2-49. Reference should also be made to IEC 60355

Who is BS EN 60068-2-42 - Sulphur dioxide test on contacts for?

BS EN BS EN 60068-2-42 on Sulphur dioxide test on contacts is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of electrical devices
  • Product development teams
  • Maintenance and augmentation teams
  • Companies associated with designing and installation of electronic devices
  • Fault management teams
  • Quality control personnel
  • Regulatory authorities

Why should you use BS EN 60068-2-42 - Sulphur dioxide test on contacts?

Electronic equipment is used in applications that rely on mechanical or electric systems for their operation. They are essential to any work on electronics systems for creating signals and capturing responses from electronic devices. There are certain specifications regarding the performance of electronic equipment. Electrical contacts assure a strong electrical connection between a wire and the device it is attached to.

BS EN 60068-2-42 helps users determine the influence of atmospheres containing Sulphur dioxide on the contact properties of precious metal or precious metal-covered contacts and connections, excluding contacts consisting of silver and some of its alloys. BS EN 60068-2-42 assists the users to check solderless connections with regard to their tightness or effectiveness. In all tests, the major criterion of performance will be the change in contact resistance caused by exposure to the Sulphur dioxide test atmosphere. BS EN 60068-2-42 walks you through the test method to verify the performance characteristics of connectors which ensures their reliability.

The guidelines in BS EN 60068-2-42 help users manufacture highly efficient electrical connectors to provide a superior quality product to their customers.
