Amended in 2024 to keep up with changing criminal methodologies, PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 details how to test and identify residential doorsets and windows that offer an enhanced security performance against opportunistic burglars.
Specific users of this standard will include:
• manufacturers, fabricators and suppliers of secure doorsets and windows;
• building specifiers;
• architects;
• standards bodies;
• certification bodies;
• test houses;
• trade associations;
• test laboratories.
PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 specifies test methods and acceptance criteria relevant to the enhanced security performance of doorsets and windows intended to resist attacks normally associated with the casual or opportunistic burglar.
It applies to new doorsets and windows as manufactured and prior to installation, and to the following products:
Windows - singular and multi-light:
1. top hung, side hung, bottom hung, butt hinged;
2. top and side hung projected;
3. top hung and side hung fully reversible;
4. tilt and turn and turn and tilt to vertical and horizontal sliding;
5. fixed and fixed casements (dummy vents);
6. parallel opening;
7. double opening (French windows);
8. vertical and horizontal pivot.
Doorsets (complete units intended for pedestrian access):
1. single and double leaf;
2. single and double swing;
3. hinged;
4. sliding (single and multi-track);
5. pivot;
6. folding sliding (single and multi-track);
7. stable;
8. with or without integral side panels and fanlights.
NOTES: The designation “PAS 24” has been retained (as opposed to “BS 24”) to avoid industry confusion and to allow for more flexibility to update the standard. Certification bodies operate accredited product certification schemes to provide assurance that doorsets and windows meet the requirements of PAS 24. The security performance requirements in PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 are not material specific. Nor does this PAS test component performance or installation requirements. Certification, however, does require you to meet the requirements of material specific standards.
This standard should be adopted for:
• Regulatory compliance: PAS 24 forms the backbone of Approved Document Q of Building Regulations in England and Wales and features in 4.13 of the Scottish Building Regulations. Compliance with Approved Document Q is mandatory for all new dwellings and failure to comply can result in enforcement actions or issues with obtaining building control approval.
• Police approval: Certification to PAS 24 is one way for a doorset or window to meet the requirements of the UK Police Service ‘Secured by Design’ scheme.
• Market differentiation and competitiveness: Manufacturers can differentiate their products in the marketplace by gaining certification to PAS 24. This demonstrates that products meet enhanced security requirements, increasing their appeal to specifiers and end-users.
• Enhanced security and safety: By addressing the latest tactics and methods used by criminals, the updated standard helps ensure that doors and windows provide a higher level of resistance against break-ins. This gives residents peace of mind, which can be especially beneficial for vulnerable populations such as elderly people.
• Reduced crime: As homes become harder to break into, potential criminals may be discouraged from attempting burglaries, leading to a safer community environment.
PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 is an amendment that supersedes PAS 24:2022.
In comparison with the previous edition, the 2024 amendment:
a) reflects changing modus operandi of criminals;
b) updates references to industry documents.
