BS EN IEC 61000-6-3:2021

What is BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3 about?  

The BS EN IEC 61000 series discusses Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). EN IEC 61000-6-3:2021 details emission requirements for electrical and electronic equipment intended for use at residential locations in order to ensure that radio reception is adequately protected. 

BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3 also applies to electrical and electronic equipment intended for use at other locations that do not fall within the scope of IEC 61000-6-8 or IEC 61000-6-4.  

The conducted and radiated emission requirements in the frequency range up to 400 GHz are considered essential and have been selected to provide an adequate level of protection of radio reception in the defined electromagnetic environment. Not all disturbance phenomena have been included for testing purposes but only those considered relevant for the equipment intended to operate within the locations included within BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3. 

Note: Safety considerations are not covered by BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3. 

Note: The emission requirements in BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3 are not intended to be applicable to the international transmissions and their harmonics from a radio transmitter. 

Who is BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3 for? 

BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3 on EMC in residential environments is useful for: 

• Manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment for residential environments including lighting equipment, IT and multimedia equipment, household electrical appliances, instrumentation, industrial and telecommunications 
• EMC test laboratories 
• Electrical testing laboratories 
• Product testers 
• Regulatory and certification bodies 
• Inspectors and quality assessors 

Why should you use BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3?  

Electrical and electronic equipment can function effectively only if it is immune to interference from surrounding electromagnetic fields. BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3 ensures that electrical and electronic equipment adequately protects radio reception in residential areas. This makes equipment easier to trade, improves system efficiency and increases trust in products. 

In addition, when BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3 is approved for OJEU listing, manufacturers of products that comply with it will be able to claim compliance with the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU, the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU and with the equivalent UK legislation. 

EMC in residential environments ensures the smooth functioning of devices for end customers. 

 BS EN IEC 61000-6-3:2021 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure because it protects radio reception. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3:2021 supersedes BS EN 61000‑6‑3:2007+A1:2011. BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑3:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 61000‑6‑3:2007+A1:2011. These include: 

• An alternative method for measuring conducted emissions on DC ports 
• Limits and requirements applicable only to equipment intended to be used in residential locations 
• More stringent limits for DC power ports
