BS EN 14038 discusses electrochemical re-alkalization and chloride extraction treatments for reinforced concrete. BS EN 14038-2 is an international standard for chloride extraction for reinforced concrete.
BS EN 14038-2 is the second part of a multi-part series that specifies a procedure for carrying out impressed current electrochemical chloride extraction from chloride-bearing concrete in existing structures.
BS EN 14038-2 applies to atmospherically exposed parts of structures with ordinary reinforcement and the post-tensioned tendon ducts that are embedded in concrete.
Under BS EN 14038-2 in the case of post-tensioned and pre-stressing concrete, tendon strands can be shielded by the tendon ducts for unwanted and exceeded polarization into the cathode range.
Under BS EN 14038-2 it is essential to verify that there is no risk of hydrogen embrittlement by conducting trials and installing monitoring during the treatment.
Note 1: BS EN 14038-2 does not apply to concrete that contains pre-stressing steel, which can suffer hydrogen embrittlement during chloride extraction, or to concrete that contains coated or galvanized reinforcement.
Note 2: Under BS EN 14038-2 it is assumed that the design and execution of a chloride extraction application are entrusted to appropriately qualified, competent and experienced people, for whose use it has been prepared.
