What is BS EN 50470‑2 about?  

BS EN 50470 discusses electricity metering equipment. BS EN 50470‑2 is part two of the BS EN 50470 multi-series and discusses the requirements of electromechanical meters for active energy. BS EN 50470‑2 applies to newly manufactured electromechanical watt-hour meters intended for residential, commercial, and light industrial use, of class indexes A and B, for the measurement of alternating current electrical active energy in 50 Hz networks. 

BS EN 50470‑2 applies to electromechanical watt-hour meters for indoor and outdoor application, consisting of a measuring element and register(s) enclosed together in a meter case. BS EN 50470‑2 also applies to operation indicator(s) and test output(s). 

BS EN 50470‑2 distinguishes between  

• Meters of class indexes A and B 
• Direct connected and transformer operated meters 
• Meters for use in networks equipped with or without earth fault neutralizers 

Note: BS EN 50470‑2 does not apply to: 

• Watt-hour meters where the voltage across the connection terminals exceeds 600 V (line-to-voltage for meters for polyphase systems) 
• Portable meters

The test levels in BS EN 50470‑2 are regarded as minimum values to guarantee the proper functioning of the electromechanical meter under normal working conditions. Other test levels in BS EN 50470‑2 might be necessary for special applications and should be agreed on between the user and the manufacturer.
