BS IEC 60479‑1 is the first part of an international multi-series standard that covers the effects of current on living beings.

BS IEC 60479‑1 gives the values of body impedance depending on a number of factors, particularly, on the current path, touch voltage, duration of current flow, frequency, degree of moisture of the skin, surface area of contact, the pressure exerted, and temperature.

BS IEC 60479‑1 indicates some impedance values, resulting from a close examination of the experimental results available from measurements carried out principally on corpses and on some living persons.

BS IEC 60479-1 is a safety publication, that refers specifically to the effects of electric current, primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and lSO/lEC Guide 51.

BS IEC 60479‑1:2018 supersedes PD IEC/TS 60479‑1:2005+A1:2016, which is withdrawn. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC TS 60479-1 and IEC TR 60479-3 as follows:
