This updated standard supports operational safety for demonstrators and commercialization of battery electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) charging sites. It is part of the Zero Emission HGVs and Infrastructure Standards Programme, sponsored by Connected Places Catapult (CPC) and funded by the Department for Transport.
The Flex provides recommendations on the design and operation of publicly accessible charging sites for battery electric HGVs. It covers:
It enables the safe rollout of battery electric HGV charging sites, supporting risk management, interoperability, accessibility and effective operation. It helps support the transition towards zero-emission road freight.
This BSI Flex is of use to the designers and operators of charging sites.
It might also be of interest to logistics providers, electrical grid suppliers, consumer groups and any other parties concerned with charging sites or battery electric HGVs.
The main changes and additions relate to operational planning, electrical and site safety and security, and multi-fuel sites.

BSI Flex 2071 v2.0 is available for public consultation.
The guidance included in this standard is being developed iteratively, using our Flex process, so they can be refined over time in line with new experience and research. The standard is currently open for public consultation until 31 July 2025, and we welcome your feedback which will inform projects.
