What is BS EN 13369 - Rules for precast concrete products about?  

BS EN 13369 is a European standard on concrete and concrete products that are intended to outline the general common requirements applicable to a large variety of precast concrete products manufactured in a factory environment. 

BS EN 13369 specifies the requirements, the basic performance criteria and the Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP) for unreinforced, reinforced and prestressed precast concrete products made of compact light-, normal- and heavyweight concrete with no appreciable amount of entrapped air other than entrained air.  The precast concrete products dealt with in BS EN 13369 are factory produced for building and civil engineering works.  

NOTE 1: Concrete containing fibres for other than mechanical properties (steel, polymer or other fibres) is also covered.  

NOTE 2: BS EN 13369 does not cover prefabricated reinforced components of lightweight aggregate concrete with an open structure. 

NOTE 3: BS EN 13369 can also be applied to products manufactured in temporary plants on-site if the production is protected against adverse weather conditions and controlled provisions. 

NOTE 4: The analysis and design of precast concrete products are not within the scope of BS EN 13369, but it does offer, for non-seismic zones, information about: 

• The choice of partial safety factors defined by the pertinent Eurocode 
• The definition of some requirements for prestressed concrete products.

Why should you use BS EN 13369 - Rules for precast concrete products?  

Precast concrete is reinforced concrete that is cast away from the building site and assembled on-site, some precast concrete is available in standard shapes and dimensions. 

BS EN 13369 provides the material requirements of concrete and concrete production. The geometrical properties and surface characteristics of precast concrete are described in BS EN 13369. BS EN 13369 navigates you through the test methods on concrete to ensure compressive strength, water absorption, density, dimensions and weight of the products. BS EN 13369 specifies assessment and verification of constancy of performance and factory production control systems of precast concrete. Marking and technical documentation are provided in BS EN 13369 which is appropriate for the chosen method of declaration for structural concrete products meeting the requirements. 

Furthermore, BS EN 13369 could assist designers in evaluating the impact of precast concrete on the environment and the building operation ensuring mechanical resistance, resistance and reaction to fire, thermal properties and durability. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 13369:2018 supersedes BS EN 13369:2013. BS EN 13369:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13369:2013. These include: 

• Normative references have been updated taking into account the new version of EN 206 
• Terms and definitions have been reviewed according to Construction Product Regulation, term and definition of “Product-type” are added 
• Clause for reclaimed crushed aggregates and recycled coarse aggregates are reviewed 
• Clause of Assessment and verification of constancy of performance is revised according to the wording of Construction Product Regulation
