ISO 616 specifies a method for determining the strength of coke by the shatter test. The shatter index of a coke can be determined for one test sieve or for each number of test sieves of varied sizes of holes (e.g., 80 mm and 40 mm).
The mean size of the coke before and after the shatter test may also be determined to give additional information about the strength of the coke.

A coke's shatter index is calculated as the percentage of the test specimen that remains on a test sieve with openings of a specified size after being dropped by a specified amount.
As described in ISO 616, shatter indices can be used by users to determine the extent of resistance to shattering of coke. The higher the shatter index, the easier it is for the coke to break into items that are smaller than specified. Additionally, the mean size of the coke before and after the shatter test can be determined to provide further information about the strength of the coke. To determine the mass of coke retained on a test sieve, or on two or more different test sieves with different holes sizes, a sample of coke is taken from the coke above a specified size.
ISO 616 provides the formula for the shatter index, Sx, which is expressed as a percentage and corresponding to a sieve of nominal size of holes x mm.
The advantage of conducting the shatter test as compared to other methods is that the drop height is constant for all coke types.
Complying with ISO 616 is useful as it helps with a dynamic strength assessment of coke through a standardized procedure, thereby helping you differentiate between good coke and relatively weak coke.
