BS EN 14350:2020

What is BS EN 14350 about?  

BS EN 14350 discusses childcare articles. BS EN 14350 specifies safety requirements relating to the materials, construction, performance, packaging and product information for drinking equipment intended for children of 0 to 48 months of age: 

• Re-usable containers and re-usable drinking accessories 
• Single-use containers and drinking accessories sold with these containers 
• Single use feeding teats 
• Ready to use feeding teats 

Note1: BS EN 14350 does not include requirements for the cleanliness of ready to use and single use products. 

Note2: BS EN 14350 does not apply to products designed for specialist clinical medical applications, e.g., those relating to cleft lip palates. 

Note3: BS EN 14350 does not apply to drinking equipment made from ceramics and bags intended for storage only. 

Note4: BS EN 14350 does not apply to drinking equipment which is supplied with fluids or food when purchased and to feeding accessories fixed to it. 

Note5: BS EN 14350 is not applicable to soothers. Safety requirements and test methods for soothers. 

Note6: BS EN 14350 is not applicable for cutlery and other feeding utensils. Safety requirements and test methods for Cutlery and other feeding equipment. 

Note7: For drinking equipment excluded from the scope, consider the applicable requirements of BS EN 14350 whenever possible. 

Who is BS EN 14350 for? 

BS EN 14350 on drinking equipment of children is useful for: 

• Drinking equipment manufacturers and suppliers  
• Parents and child carriers 
• Quality control laboratories 

Why should you use BS EN 14350?  

A significant choking hazard can arise if the component parts of drinking equipment become separated during use. This hazard is addressed in BS EN 14350 by the inclusion of a security test.BS EN 14350 provides safety requirements and test methods relating to the materials, construction, performance, packaging, and product information for drinking equipment intended for children. 

There is a risk of severe suffocation if the components of the drinking equipment become detached during use. This possibility is addressed by the inclusion of safety requirements and test methods in BS EN 14350. That helps you to manufacture drinking equipment considering the safety of the children.  

BS EN 14350 sets out labelling requirements stating that parents or carriers should not leave children unattended whilst being fed with a product containing a feeding teat or using a container made of glass and those children should not be allowed to use feeding teats as a soother. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 14350:2020 supersedes BS EN 14350‑2:2004 and BS EN 14350‑1:2004, which are withdrawn.  

BS EN 14350:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 14350‑2:2004 and BS EN 14350‑1:2004. These include: 

• The standard has been completely renewed and a new structure was given. The former two parts were joined together into one standard. A whole series of new aspects had to be considered, following changes in the market and the regulatory background 
• Introduction: Completely reworded and references to European regulations were renewed 
• The requirements and test conditions have been set with the consideration of the chemical exposure: food contact, mouthing, or ingestion. Chemical requirements and test methods were set for materials (like rubber, silicon, TPE, metal, glass) and exposures (mouthing and swallowing) which are recently not covered by harmonized legislations. Requirements for substances (e.g., Phthalates and BPA) covered by harmonized regulation (like REACH, (EU) 10/2011 or its amendments) have not been included
