ISO 10545-16 is an International Standard on ceramic tiles. The main aim of the ISO 10545 series is to provide best industry practices that help distinguish good quality tiles from bad.
ISO 10545-16 is the 16th part of the series that describes a method for utilizing colour measuring instruments for quantifying the small colour differences between plain coloured ceramic tiles, which are designed to be of uniform and consistent colour.
ISO 10545-16 permits the specification of a maximum acceptable value, which depends only on the closeness of the match and not on the nature of the colour difference.
Note: ISO 10545-16 is not applicable to colour variations produced for artistic purposes.
ISO 10545-16 on ceramic tiles is useful for:
Colorimetric measurements are made on reference standard tiles and a test specimen of tiles of the same colour and the differences are calculated. Colour measurement and colour matching are used to ensure that products are as specified and consistent between batches.
ISO 10545-16 enable the specification of acceptable colour differences between consignments of samples.
In this regard, ISO 10545-16 covers the test equipment, test procedure, calculations and interpretation of results of colour difference between the test and the reference tiles.
To determine the acceptability of a colour match, the estimated colour difference of a test specimen is compared to a reference value, typically used in the tile industry.
Moreover, small colour variations are vital for construction projects to avoid inconsistencies in the manufacturing process and giving aesthetic importance of tiles to the end-users.
