What is BS EN 15494 about?  

BS EN 15494 covers safety labels for candles. Its guidance specifies safety information for burning indoor candles and includes requirements on how safety information will be displayed.

Why should you use BS EN 15494?  

Fires caused by unsafe candles and inappropriate use during the burning of candles have led to consumer concern for these issues. 

Most fire damage caused by candles can be attributed to improper use by the consumer. The fire risk of the candle due to inappropriate use can be minimized by suitable safety information provided by the BS EN 15494 for the consumer. 

Assessment of the product’s hazards is evaluating what residual risks remain after protective steps have been taken in the design and guarding of hazards and determining which of these hazards shall be addressed with the use of safety labelling. BS EN 15494 aids you in making choices of which hazards pose the greatest risk and require a safety label. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 15494:2019 supersedes BS EN 15494:2007, which is withdrawn. BS EN 15494:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 15494:2007.  These include: 

• Terms and definitions have been inserted 
• Part of the supplementary safety information has been modified to improve consumer comprehensibility and additional supplementary safety information has been introduced 
• A clear allocation of which supplementary safety information is mandatory or appropriate for which type of candle, based on a risk assessment, has been made 
• The option to provide safety information with an instruction leaflet has been removed 
• The examples of product safety labels layout on candle fire safety have been improved and complemented
