IEC 60670-1 applies to boxes, enclosures, and parts of enclosures (hereafter called “boxes” and “enclosures”) for electrical accessories with a rated voltage not exceeding 1000 V a. c. and 1500 V d. c. intended for household or similar fixed electrical installations, either indoors or outdoors.
Compliance with IEC 60670-1 for Boxes and enclosures are suitable for use at ambient temperatures not normally exceeding +40 ° C, but their average over a period of 24 h doesn't exceed +35°C, with a lower limit of the ambient air temperature of 5°C.
During the installation, the temperature may be outside the above temperature range according to the classification of the boxes and the enclosures.
Note1: IEC 60670-1 is intended to apply to boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories within the scope of IEC technical committee 23.
Note 2: IEC 60670-1 does not apply to ceiling roses, luminaire supporting couplers, boxes, enclosures, and parts of enclosures specifically designed to be used for cable trunking and ducting systems complying with IEC 61084 and which are not intended to be installed outside of these systems.
IEC 60670-1 on boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories is useful for:
The boxes and enclosures help to protect the electrical system, which contains electrical wiring, fibre optic devices, microcontrollers, routers, switches etc., against high temperature, moisture, and humidity.
IEC 60670-1 tells you about the designing and construction of boxes and enclosures such that, in normal use, their performance is reliable, and safety is achieved by reducing risk to a tolerable level.
IEC 60670-1 even provides you protection from the equipment itself, like preventing from electric shocks.
IEC 60670-1 may be used as a reference document for other IEC technical committees and subcommittees and compliance is checked by meeting all the relevant requirements and tests specified.
BS EN IEC 60670-1:2021+A11:2021 supersedes BS EN 60670-1:2005+A1:2013, which will be withdrawn on 9 April 2023. BS EN IEC 60670-1:2021+A11:2021 includes some technical changes as follows:
