While bituminous mixes are stable, flexible, and workable; they need to be resistant to fuels in order to remain intact in the long run. BS EN 12697-43 is the 43rd part of the ‘bituminous mixtures – test methods for hot mix asphalt’ multi-series.
BS EN 12697-43 specifies a test method to determine the resistance of a bituminous mixture or pavement to fuels. The procedure involves the initial soaking of a test specimen made in the laboratory or cored from a pavement in a fuel, followed by a brushing period with a brush test device. The material loss of the specimen is a measure of the resistance to that fuel for that bituminous mixture.
BS EN 12697-43 on ‘asphalt resistance to fuels’ is useful for:
Bitumen, when used as a binder in asphalt, is used in the construction domain for road construction, paving, and roofing. To remain undamaged in the long-term, it needs to be resistant to fuels.
A test technique for determining the pavement to fuels of samples of bituminous mixtures is described in BS EN 12697-43. The test method described in BS EN 12697-43 enables you to dissolve bitumen and distil the solution to recover the water.
BS EN 12697-43 guidelines help you ensure the quality and performance of the asphalt. This enhances the durability and service life of roads and pavements that are subjected to fuel-contact.
BS EN 12697-43:2020 supersedes BS EN 12697-43:2005, which has been withdrawn. BS EN 12697-43:2020 includes the following editorial and technical changes with reference to EN 12697-43:2005. These include:
