What is BS EN 13108-5 - Material specifications for stone mastic asphalt about?  

BS EN 13108-5 discusses material specifications of bituminous mixtures. BS EN 13108-5 specifies requirements for mixtures of the mix group stone mastic asphalt for use on roads, airfields, and other trafficked areas. Stone mastic asphalt is mainly to be used for surface courses. Stone Mastic Asphalt can also be used for regulating and binder courses. 

BS EN 13108-5 includes requirements for the selection of the constituent materials. 

Note1: The mixtures of the mix group Stone Mastic Asphalt are produced on the basis of hot bitumen. Mixtures utilizing bitumen emulsion and bituminous materials based on in situ recycling are not covered by BS EN 13108-5. 

Note2: BS EN 13108-5 is designed to be read in conjunction with BS EN 13108-20 and BS EN 13108-21.

Stone mastic asphalt (SMA) is a stone-on-stone-like skeletal structure of gap-graded aggregate, bonded together by mastic, which is higher binder content, filler, and fiber to reduce the binder drain. The aim of BS EN 13108-5 is to enable the specification of stone mastic asphalt mixtures on a performance basis.

What is changed since the last update?  

BS EN 13108-5:2016 supersedes BS EN 13108-5:2006 which is withdrawn. 

BS EN 13108-5:2016 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13108-5:2006.  

These include: 

• A fundamental approach has been added and merged with the empirical approach into one list with different properties 
• New properties introduced (stiffness, fatigue, saturation tensile stiffness conditioning test, low temperature properties, fracture toughness, friction after polishing) 
• For several properties additional categories are introduced 
• Possibility to define specific conditions in documents related to the application of the product 
• CPR reference and new Annex ZA according to CPR rules
