BS EN ISO 276:2021

What is ISO 276 about?  

ISO 276 specifies the requirements and the corresponding test methods for five types of linseed stand oil suitable for paints and varnishes. 

Who is ISO 276 for? 

ISO 276 on binders for paints and varnishes is applicable to: 

• Paint Manufacturers 
• Paint and varnish suppliers/ retailers 
• Painters 
• Builders / Real estate developers 
• Contractors 
• Quality control personnel 

Why should you use ISO 276?  

Linseed stands oil causes oil colours to flow out as they dry, reducing brush strokes. ISO 276 lists out required characteristics and test methods for linseed stand oil such as viscosity, turbidity, colour, acid value, and saponification value. 

ISO 276 acts as a guide for you to refer to the appropriate test methods for specific characteristics of linseed stand oil. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN ISO 276:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 276:2010, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 276:2021 

includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 276:2010. These include: 

• Requirements for turbidity and colour have been added  
• For the determination of acid value, ISO 660 has been added 
• For the determination of saponification value, ISO 3657 has been added 
• A general reference to ISO 4618 for terms and definitions has been added to Clause 3 
• The text has been editorially revised
