What is BS EN IEC 62368‑1 about?  

BS EN IEC 62368‑1 is the first part of an international multi-series standard that deals with information, and communication technology equipment. 

BS EN IEC 62368‑1 is a product safety standard that classifies energy sources, prescribes safeguards against those energy sources, and provides guidance on the application of, and requirements for, those safeguards. 

BS EN IEC 62368‑1 provides the guidelines for the safety of electrical and electronic equipment within the field of audio, video, information, and communication technology.  

BS EN IEC 62368‑1 is a single international product safety standard covering the broad range of electronic, IT, and communication technology products found everywhere and used by most of us on a daily basis.

Why should you use this BS EN IEC 62368‑1?  

BS EN IEC 62368‑1 is a product safety standard that classifies energy sources that prescribes safeguards against those energy and provides guidance on the application of, and requirements for, those safeguards. 

BS EN IEC 62368‑1 describes safeguards for the protection of three kinds of persons the ordinary, the instructed person, and the skilled person.  

BS EN IEC 62368‑1 safety standard specifies three classes of energy sources defined by magnitudes and durations of source parameters relative to the body responses to those electrical and thermal energy sources. BS EN IEC 62368‑1 set an approach that is hazard-based which is helpful for risk analysis, emphasizing a requirement for manufacturers to demonstrate that known hazards have been considered and the product has been designed to be safe. 

BS EN IEC 62368‑1 classifies energy sources, prescribes safeguards against those energy sources, and provides guidance on the application of, and requirements for, those safeguards which are intended to reduce the likelihood of pain, injury, and, in the case of fire, property damage.    

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN IEC 62368‑1:2020+A11:2020 supersedes BS EN 62368‑1:2014+A11:2017, which will be withdrawn. These include the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: 

•  Addition of requirements for outdoor equipment 
•  New requirements for optical radiation 
•  Addition of requirements for insulating liquids 
•  Addition of requirements for work cells 
• Addition of requirements for wireless power transmitters
