What is BS EN 13920-16 – Aluminium alloys about? 

BS EN 13920-16 is a European standard that discusses the scrap consisting of skimming, drosses, spills and metallics for aluminium alloys. Aluminium alloys are widely used in engineering structures and components where light weight or corrosion resistance is required. 

BS EN 13920-16 specifies characteristics, chemical composition and metal yield of aluminium scrap consisting of skimmings, drosses and spills. It also applies to the metallics obtained by dry processing of drosses and skimmings. 

Full lots of dross fines with a particle size smaller than 0,8 mm, or lots of drosses with a metal yield less than 30 % are not within the scope of BS EN 13920-16.

• The definition of the beginning and end of the period during which the scrap is delivered 
• The expected metal yields 
• Any characteristics deviating from those specified under 5.1, e.g., size of the particle, presence of foreign material 
• Guidance about the origin of the scrap, e.g., a primary aluminium smelter, remelter, foundry 
• Any guidance about the size of the pieces, whenever meaningful.
