What is BS EN 1706:2020 about?
It covers the chemical composition limits and mechanical properties of aluminium casting alloys. BS EN 1706:2020 is an extensive update of the 2010 version of this standard.
Who is BS EN 1706:2020 for?
Why should you use BS EN 1706:2020?
This European standard specifies the chemical composition limits of aluminium casting alloys and the mechanical properties of separately cast test pieces for these alloys. Annex C is a guide to the selection of alloys for a specific use or process.
BS EN 1706:2020 provides particularly important guidance given that most UK aluminium is recycled. In addition, use of this standard:
NOTE: BS EN 1706:2020 is intended to be used in conjunction with BS EN 576, BS EN 1559-1, BS EN 1559-4, BS EN 1676 and BS EN ISO 8062-3.
What’s new about BS EN 1706:2020?
The standard was extensively rewritten to bring it up to date with current methodologies. In comparison with the 2010 standard, the following significant changes were made:
a) Normative reference BS EN 10002-1 was replaced by BS EN ISO 6892-1
b) Terms and definitions were updated
c) In Table 1:
d) In Table 2:
e) In Table 3:
f) In Table A.1:
g) A new Annex B was added and the former Annex B renamed to Annex C
h) In Table C.1, the same alloys as in Table 1 were added or deleted respectively. The suitability of some casting methods was revised for some alloys as well as some rankings of properties, and footnotes were modified
The former Annex C was renamed to Annex D and Table D.1 was completely revised.
