What is BS EN 12312-5 about? 

BS EN 12312-5 is part-5 of a series on aircraft ground support equipment. 12312-5 discusses fuelling equipment for aircrafts. This includes fuelling equipment that provides aviation fuels at maintenance bases, airfields and heliports. 12312-5 specifies performance requirements for aircraft fuelling equipment (AFE). 12312-5 also elaborates on technical requirements to minimize hazards  during the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of aircraft fuelling equipment.  

BS EN 12312-5 is applicable  to all types of aircraft fuelling equipment. This includes: 

• Aircraft refuellers 
• Hydrant dispensers 
• Defuellers 
• Hydrant pit servicing vehicles 
• Pit cleaner vehicle 
• Stationary dispensing units 

Note: BS EN 12312-5 does not deal with hazards in respect to a standard automotive chassis and from other vehicles on the apron.

Use this part of the EN 12312 series in conjunction with EN 19151:2013, EN 19152:2001+A1:2009, EN 19153:2004+A1:2009 (for vehicles) and EN 19154:2004+A1:2009 to comply with requirements for aircraft fuelling equipment. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN 12312‑5:2021 supersedes BS EN 12312‑5:2005+A1:2009. 

BS EN 12312‑5:2021  includes some technical changes concerning BS EN 12312‑5:2005+A1:2009. These include: 

• Amendment A1:2009 was incorporated 
• The Introduction and scope was updated 
• The list of hazards was updated to exclude hazards due to traffic and repair and was moved to Annex A 
• Clause 5, Safety requirements and/or measures, was completely revised and changed 
• Subclause 5.6.5 Ergonomic aspects on AFE for fuel supply, was added 
• Subclause 6.1, Marking, and Subclause 6.2 Additional marking were changed 
• Annex D, Ancillary equipment to access the aircraft fuelling panel (refueling ladder), was added 
• Annex ZA referring to the Machinery Directive 98/37/EC was replaced by Annex ZA referring to the new Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
