BS 3445-1 is the first part of a multi-series standard that covers specifications for water trough bodies, service boxes and water supply systems that provide drinking water to animals and livestock on farms.
BS 3445-1 specifies requirements for the bodies of agricultural water troughs for holding drinking water for livestock and for the associated water pipes and fittings, the water level is maintained by a float operated valve controlling a supply of water through a pipe.
BS 3445-1 covers troughs of any suitable shape and of capacity between 60 L and 3 000 L. In BS 3445-1, section 2 deals with trough bodies and section 3 deals with water fittings and service boxes.
BS 3445-1 on specifications for water trough bodies, service boxes and water supply systems apply to:
A trough body is a principal water container of a water trough. A service box is a housing, either integral with the water trough or attached to it, incorporating a means of attachment for a water supply and for a float operated valve and float. The design of water fittings shall be such that the trough, when installed, can be supplied with water in such a way that the supply is protected from contamination, back siphonage, or backflow.
BS 3445-1 provides users guidance on requirements for different types of troughs, including concrete troughs, galvanized steel troughs, GRC troughs, and polyethylene troughs, enabling users to standardize the production of water troughs for improved efficiency and performance.
BS 3445-1 provides users guidance on water fitting and service box, including general requirements, materials, design and construction, enabling users to prevent contamination, back siphonage, and backflow.
With obedience and compliance to BS 3445-1, users can develop and assess water trough bodies, service boxes and water supply systems, ensuring flexible connectivity, prevention of contamination and spill-proof water supply.
BS 3445-1:1992 supersedes BS 3445:1981, which is now withdrawn.
