BS EN ISO 4254-6:2020

What is ISO 4254‑6 about? 

ISO 4254‑6 is the sixth part of the ISO 4254 multi-series that focuses on the safety of agricultural machinery. 

ISO 4254‑6 specifies the safety requirements and their verification for the design and construction of mounted, semi-mounted, trailed and self-propelled agricultural sprayers for use with plant protection products (PPP) and liquid fertilizer application, as placed on the market by the manufacturer and designed for a single operator only. 

ISO 4254‑6 specifies the type of information on safe working practices (including residual risks) to be provided by the manufacturer. ISO 4254‑6 deals with significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to sprayers and liquid fertilizer distributors when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseeable by the manufacturer. 

Note: ISO 4254‑6 does not apply to - 

• Hazards from protection of the driver against spray when spraying 
• Hazards from automatically actuated height adjustment systems 
• Hazards arising from the environment, other than noise 
• Hazards from moving parts for power transmission except strength requirements for guards and barriers 
• Sprayers and liquid fertilizer distributors which are manufactured before its publication

ISO 4254‑6 on safety requirements for sprayers and liquid fertilizer distributors is applicable to: 

• Manufacturers of agricultural machinery 
• Dealers, suppliers and importers of agricultural machinery 
• Regulatory bodies 
• Quality control personnel 

Why should you use ISO 4254‑6? 

With the growing mechanization of agriculture, demand for advanced agricultural machinery has skyrocketed. Sprayers and liquid fertilizer distributors engage in foliar feeding which is the quickest way to get nutrition to plants. They help in improving spraying efficiency, productivity and production yield of crops. However, these equipment need to be handled and operated with caution as they deal with elements that could be harmful when directly exposed to the user. 

ISO 4254‑6 provides you safety requirements which include stability, pressure indicator, overpressure, fan for air-assistance, spray liquid carrying hoses, spraying stop control, clean water tank, servicing and maintenance which allows you to ensure the safety and protection of sprayers and liquid fertilizer distributors. 

Incorporating ISO 4254‑6 safety requirements for sprayers and liquid fertilizer distributors ensures operational safety, stability and longevity of machinery and components. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN ISO 4254‑6:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 4254-6:2009, which is now withdrawn. 

Changes in BS EN ISO 4254‑6:2020 include - 

• Some excluded hazards have been deleted from the scope 
• The general (stability) requirements have been deleted 
• In 4.6.2, the requirements for chemical inductions bowls have been amended to cover foldable devices 
• In 4.7, requirements for protecting the operator in case of leakages have been added 
• A new subclause (4.12) to deal with the storage of personal protective equipment has been added 
• Clause 6 has been aligned with ISO 4254‑1
