BS EN 61800‑5‑2 is a part of an international product standard that covers adjustable speed electrical power drive systems.
BS EN 61800‑5‑2 specifies the requirements and recommends the design and development, integration and validation of safety, related to power drive systems (PDS(SR)) in terms of their functional safety considerations.
BS EN 61800‑5‑2 is applicable where functional safety of a PDS(SR) is claimed and the PDS(SR) is operating mainly in the high demand or continuous mode. It gives safety sub-functions implemented for high demand or continuous mode, that can also be used in low demand mode. It also provides guidance for the estimation of the average probability of dangerous failure on demand (PFDavg) value.
Note: BS EN 61800‑5‑2 applies to adjustable speed electrical power drive systems covered by the other parts of the IEC 61800 series of standards.
BS EN 61800‑5‑2 on Power drive systems is useful for the entities dealing with the applications:
Power drive systems contain a group of a pump, an electric motor, adjustable speed controls, and sensors, which permits equipment to vary their speed up to meet demand making the pumps more efficient.
BS EN 61800‑5‑2 sets out a framework for safety-related considerations of PDS(SR)s and introduces requirements for power drive systems as subsystems of a safety-related system. It facilitates the fulfilment of the requirements of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic (E/E/PE) components of a power drive system (SR) related to the safety performance of safety sub-function(s) of a power drive system.
The users of BS EN 61800‑5‑2 can indicate the safety performance for their equipment (system integrator, original equipment manufacturer). It helps the users to incorporate a PDS(SR) into a safety-related control system as well as specific sector implementations using the principles given.
BS EN 61800‑5‑2:2017 supersedes BS EN 61800‑5‑2:2007, which is withdrawn. BS EN 61800‑5‑2:2017 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
