BS 4656-36 is the 36th part of the BS 4656 multi-series that discusses the accuracy of machine tools and test methods.
BS 4656-36 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-1, preliminary tests, geometrical tests and practical tests for portal-type Plano-milling machines which apply to general purpose, normal accuracy, machines and gives the corresponding permissible deviations.
BS 4656-36 is applicable to machines with moving tables and fixed double columns. BS 4656-36 deals only with verifying the machine’s accuracy.
Note1: BS 4656-36 does not include single-column (open-sided) machines and those with fixed tables and moving columns.
Note2: BS 4656-36 does not apply to the testing of the running of the machine (vibration, abnormal noise, stick-slip motion of components, etc.) nor to the machine characteristics (speeds, feeds etc.) which should generally be checked before testing the accuracy.
BS 4656-36 on the accuracy of machine tools and test methods is useful for:
Portal type Plano-milling machines are widely used in industries for the precise shaping of metals & various solid materials. However, these machines need to be regularly verified for accuracy to identify whether there is any disturbance in their components that could affect their operational capability.
BS 4656-36 provides you with the nomenclature used for the principal parts of the machine and the designation of the axes. The test methods of BS 4656-36 help you to verify whether the component of portal type Plano-milling machines like bed, table, gantry, milling head, and milling spindle are designed and installed accurately and have permissible deviations.
Overall, the test methods of BS 4656-36 help you to verify and enhance the build quality of your portal type Plano-milling machines.
