What is ISO 6947-Welding positions about? 

ISO 6947 is an international standard that discusses welding and allied processes.  

ISO 6947 defines welding positions for testing and production, for butt and fillet welds, in all product forms. The main objective of ISO 6947-compliant welding positions is to achieve a good weld that suit your specific engineering and operation needs ISO 6947 also defines positions for production welding. These positions are flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead. Unlike discrete testing positions, these positions are contiguous.

Why should you use ISO 6947-Welding positions? 

Welding position is the position of a weld defined relative to the slope of the axis and rotation of the face of the weld relative to the horizontal plane.  

ISO 6947 specifies positions for standard discrete test piece orientation, e.g. PA, PB, H-L045, that have been included since the third edition. The main positions have been given symbols which can easily be used for designation purposes.

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN ISO 6947:2019 supersedes BS EN ISO 6947:2011, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 6947:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 6947:2019. These include: 

• Figure 1 and Figure 2 have been revised 
• The concept of a special test position that is not covered by defined test positions has been introduced 
• Editorial corrections/improvements have been made
