BS EN 15011 discusses cranes. The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations, and hazardous events are covered, are indicated in the scope of BS EN 15011. The specific hazards due to potentially explosive atmospheres, ionizing radiation, and operation in the electromagnetic environment beyond the scope of BS EN 61000-6-2 are not covered by BS EN 15011.
Note 1: BS EN 15011 is applicable to bridge and gantry cranes manufactured after the date of its publication as a European standard.
Note 2: Light crane systems (assembly of lifting devices, crane bridges, trolleys, and tracks; wall-mounted, pillar, and workshop jib cranes) are covered by EN 16851.
Note 3: BS EN 15011 applies to bridge and gantry cranes able to travel by wheels on rails, runways, or roadway surfaces, and to gantry cranes without wheels mounted in a stationary position.
Note 4: BS EN 15011 does not include requirements for the lifting of persons.
BS EN 15011 on bridge and gantry cranes is useful for:
Although cranes are designed to lift and move heavy objects safely, they pose a number of potential hazards. BS EN 15011 applies to bridge and gantry cranes. The intent of BS EN 15011 is to prevent injuries and fatalities from bridge and gantry cranes. By adopting BS EN 15011, you can demonstrate the reliability of their bridge and gantry cranes and build trust in their use throughout the logistics supply chain.
BS EN 15011 has been prepared to be a harmonized standard to provide one means for bridge and gantry cranes to conform with the essential health and safety requirements of the Machinery Directive.
BS EN 15011 specifies requirements for all significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events relevant to the bridge and gantry cranes when used as intended and under conditions foreseen by the manufacturer.
As many of the hazards related to bridge and gantry cranes relate to their operating environment and use, it is assumed in the preparation of BS EN 15011that all the relevant information relating to the use and operating environment of the crane has been exchanged between the manufacturer and the user covering such issues as, for example:
BS EN 15011:2020 supersedes BS EN 15011:2011+A1:2014, which is withdrawn.
The major technical changes in this edition compared to EN 15011:2011+A1:2014 are in 5.1, 5.2.1.3.2, 5.2.1.5, 5.2.2.2, and 6.3.2. Moreover, the status of Annex D has been changed from normative to informative.
