BS 5489-1:2003+A2:2008

BS 5489-1:2003 gives recommendations on the general principles of road lighting, gives recommendations on aesthetic and technical aspects, and advises on statutory provisions, operation and maintenance.

Rrecommendations ares also given in the following areas:

• Lighting for all types of highways, public thoroughfares, subways and bridges including those specifically for pedestrians and cyclists
• Design of lighting for urban centres and public amenity areas
• Lighting around aerodromes, railways, harbours and navigable waterways, in order to minimize the possibility of the lighting interfering with these modes of transport.

The 2008 amendment contains guidance and recommendations that are intended to support BS EN 13201 and to enable designers of lighting systems to comply with that standard.

BS 5489-2 is applicable to electrical and mechanical engineers, lighting engineers, surveyors, road construction planners and workers and those involved in civil engineering and urban planning.

BS 5489-1:2003 supersedes BS 5489-1:1992, 5489-2:1992,5489-3:1992, 5489-4:1992, 5489-5:1992, 5489-6:1992, 5489-8:1998, 5489-9:1996 and BS 5489-10:1992, which are withdrawn.
