ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 41, Pulleys and belts (including veebelts), Subcommittee SC 1, Friction.

This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 4184:1992), which has been technically revised.

The main changes are as follows:

the Scope text has been made succinct to conform with current drafting rules;
a new Clause 4 has been created for details on the requirements covered by this document;
Table 1 on datum width for groove profile (previously appearing in the Scope) has been created;
the normative references list has been updated;
less than or equal to signs have been corrected in Tables 2, 3 and 4.
